Accepting PhD Students
I am the University academic lead for Transnational Education and this work engages through the University's Flexible Learning Programme between the three faculties and our post professional (UK and international) online and blended programmes/courses aimed at non-standard university students. This position gives me the unique opportunity to champion the kind of learning I understand so well, having achieved all but my bachelors while teaching and in full employment. Manchester has increadible potential to serve the professional leaders of today (and tomorrow), but also disadvantaged groups and demographics through its growing flexible palette of courses and programmes, and I am excited to be able to support this with my experience and knowledge of a lifetime in international education.
I was the initial start up programme director of the award winning Masters degree in Educational Leadership in Practice, where I still maintain a strong teaching and supervisory presence. I am interested in equity distinction and power in education and its leadership, but also global crises and educational leadership, and of course, leading transnational education in times of crisis and beyond. My work seeks to better understand how educational leadership is experienced by teachers, leaders and children, and to explore transformational ways to generate positive working environments, with happy children, and collegial, relational work conditions. My work often utilises the social thinking tools of Bourdieu and Habermas, among others.
I am associate editor of scholarly journal Educational Management Administration and Leadership and founding convenor of the British Educational Leadership Management Administration Society (BELMAS) Research Interest Group Comparative and International Education. I am advisory editor of the scholarly journal International and Comparative Education and Development and in our Manchester Insitute of Education, I am an active member of the Critical Educational Leadership and Policy research interest group.
I have very limited availability to supervise PhD students, but particularly welcome proposals from those interested in international schools leadership, educational leadership and crises, and leadership in transnational spaces.
