Overview

Alexander G. Mathioudakis is a Senior Lecturer in Respiratory Medicine at the University of Manchester and Honorary Consultant Respiratory Phycisian at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. His research focuses on Airway Diseases phenotypes and personalised medicine, as well as clinical research methodology, evidence based medicine and health policy.

He graduated from the Medical School of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece, 2011) and started his clinical training in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine in Health Education North West. He undertook a Fellowship in Guidelines Methodology at Cochrane Iberoamerica and NICE (European Respiratory Society-ERS, 2016), followed by an Academic Clinical Fellowship in Respiratory Medicine at the University of Manchester (NIHR, 2016-2018) a PhD Studentship by the NIHR Manchester Biomedical Reseach Centre (BRC, 2018-2022) a NIHR Clinical Lectureship in Respiratory Medicine, and a Pickering Fellowship by the North West Lung Centre Charity.

He has published over 165 peer review publications and has an h-index of 50 (based on >25,000 citations) in Google Scholar. His research has influenced policy internationally, having been cited in more than 200 policy documents from 57 bodies worldwide (SciVal). He has received competitive research funding and he is currently the principal investigator of a prestigious NIHR Health Technology Assessment (HTA) grant. He has contributed to or co-led the development of several national and international clinical practice guidelines. 

He is actively involved in the European Respiratory Society (ERS). He is currently the Chair of ERS Group 5.1 (Airway Pharmacology & Treatment), member of the ERS Advocacy Council and the ERS Guidelines Working Group and chair of an ERS Task Force developing a Core Outcome Set for COPD Maintenance Management. He has also served other national and international respiratory societies, while he is also an Early Career Co-chair of the DisEntangling Chronic Obstructive pulmonary Disease Exacerbations: An international clinical trials NETwork (the DECODE-NET) and member of the Steering Committee of the Pediatric Asthma in Real Life (PeARL) think tank.

He periodically reviews grant proposals for various research boards, such as  the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR-UK), Health Research Board (HBR-Ireland), and the European Respiratory Society (ERS). He has served as a fudning board panel member for ERA4HEALTH.

He is an Editor of the Cochrane Airways (Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews), associate editor of Breathe (ERS) and Folia Medica and a member of the editorial board of Frontiers in Allergy and Archives of Hellenic Medicine. He regularly peer reviews manuscripts for the BMJ, ERJ, AJRCCM, Chest, Allergy and other leading journals.
