Overview

I am a Unversity Senior Lecturer/Honorary and  Consultant in Restorative Dentistry (Central Manchester Foundation Trust)

Biography

Having graduated at the University of Leeds Dental School with honours, I worked at Leeds General Infirmary in hospital posts for two years, then moved to Manchester where I was first appointed to a senior house officer post and then as a lecturer. I completed an MSc and PhD at the same time as undergoing clinical training in restorative dentistry and successfully achieving FDS and MRD qualifications from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh prior to being appointed as senior lecturer and honorary consultant in restorative dentistry. I am on the GDC specialist lists in Restorative Dentistry and Endodontics. I have had major roles in several aspects of teaching and learning including the establishment of student pairing in clinical dentistry, As senior lecturer, previous resposibilities including having been Head of Operative Dentistry and Head of Restorative Dentistry.I was the key player in establishing the highlly successful postgraduate programme in endodontics in the school and was also responsible for the development of a collaborative on line MSc programme in restorative dentistry.

Currently, as the undergraduate lead for year 4 students I am responsible for leading on strategic direction for thsi cohort of students. As  a supervisor of PhD and MSc students and clincal postgraduate student tutor I have a broad span of activity

My research interests focus around endodontics and restoration of the root filled tooth and include finite element analysis and optimisation technology, tooth coloured posts, lasers in endodontics, dental imaging in endodontics, microbiological aspects, success rates, aspects of root treatment in practice.  Other interests include disseminated learning in postgraduate dental education and ceramics in restorative dentistry.

I am an external examiner for a number of institutions both in the UK including the College of Surgeon and have lectured widely internationally.  I am a Senior Fellow of rhe Higher Education Academy, Council member of the British Endodontic Society, Chair of the Teachers of Endodontolgy Group and committee member of the Faculty of Dental Surgeons Clinical Standards Committee. University responsibilities include having been on Sental and on the Board of Governors. I referee papers for the International Endodontic Journal, the BDJ, Dental Update, the Journal of Dentistry and Dental Materials.

Research interests

I work in a School which came top in the 2014 research assessment exercise. My research interests are wide ranging and I have collaborations with a number of individuals, within the School, the University and internationally. Examples include joint research with Professor David Watts (Biomaterials), Professor Keith Horner (Dental Imaging), Porfessor Anne Marie Glenny (Cochrane reviews), Dr Riina Richardson (Microbiology). Previous colaborators include Dr David Drucker (Microbiology) in the dental school. Professor Jonathon Cooper and Dr Alex Fok (Engineering) within the University and Professor Brian Monteith, Professor Nick Chandler and Dr David Purton (New Zealand), Professor Fons Plasschaert (Nijmegen) and Professor Claes Reit (Goteborg) as international collaborators.

Other interests include disseminated learning in postgraduate dental education and ceramics in restorative dentistry.

My PhD students have made a significant contribution to their field and have reaped the benefits of their time in Manchester. Four have presented at the International Association for Dental Research meetings. Five have gone on to lead their own departments. One student won the dental school research prize for her work on the effects of re-treating root filled teeth, another was nominated for the 2011 Scopus Young Researcher Award following graduation, another had 10 papers published.

Teaching

As the first HEA Senior Fellow in the School of Dentistry, I am involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate education having had major roles in several asects of teaching and learning including the establishment of student pairing in clinical dentistry. I was the key player in establishing the highlly successful postgraduate programme in endodontics in the school and was also responsible for the devlopment of a collaborative on line MSc programme in restorative dentistry. I am involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate education. Currently I am the lead for year 4 undergraduate students. I also teach on the postgraduate programme in endodontics and supervise MSc and PhD research students.
