Personal profile

Biography

I obtained my BA in English Studies from The University of Valladolid in Spain, where my interest in translation and the pedagogy of teaching specialist languages began. This led me to complete an MA in Specialized English/Spanish Translation at the Centre for Research on Bilingual Terminology, Specialized Translation, and Contrastive Analysis (CITTAC). I furthered my academic journey with an MSc in Machine Translation at the Centre for Computational Linguistics at UMIST, which sparked my passion for investigating the intersection of translation, Computer Aided Translation, Free Online Machine Translation, Computer Assisted Language Learning, and language teaching/learning. My PhD research explored these connections, culminating in significant contributions to the field. Since then, I have actively disseminated my research findings at national and international levels, engaging with both professionals and research students.

Research interests

My research explores the integration of technology (including AI) in language learning and teaching, language teachers’ professional development, multimodality and the acquisition of specialized and closely-related languages.

I am particularly enthusiastic about technology-enhanced language learning, encompassing ICALL systems, MT systems, mobile applications, e-tools, Data-Driven Learning, corpus linguistics, Problem-Based Learning, and Computer-Mediated Communication.

Additionally, I am recognized as one of the top 100 reviewers for the CALL Journal and also contribute as a reviewer for the Language Learning and Technology Journal and the System Journal amongst others, maintaining an active presence in the academic community.

Teaching

With over 20 years of experience in teaching Spanish in Higher Education, my teaching includes Spanish language and culture, advanced English/Spanish translation, and Medical Spanish. I have also taught courses in Spanish for STEM, Business Spanish, and language pedagogy.

I have been coordinating the LEAP/ Institution-wide Spanish Programme and the MBChB with European Studies Medical Spanish Programme since 2006 contributing effectively to curriculum development and overseeing assessment.
