Andrew Hall is a Senior Lecturer in Educational Technologies and Academic Lead for eLearning in the School of Health Sciences, University of Manchester. Andrew’s research activity includes national and international collaborations on the use of web and mobile technologies in health and social care education and practice. Andrew’s research focuses on the use of web and mobile technologies as complex interventions to aid self and shared management of long term conditions. As Director of Online Education in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work at the University of Manchester, Andrew developed the role of technology in health and social care education across undergraduate and graduate programmes and is a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy. Andrew has presented and published widely in the field of web and mobile technologies in health and social care education and practice.
Andrew's current teaching and pedagogical development work within the School of Health Sciences at the University of Manchester includes: enhancing PGR provision, blended PGT provison, and online PGT provision through the use of technology. Andrew also, as part of a Department of Education funded regional teaching partnership, leads the introduction of ePortfolios for professional development across 2 HEIs and their local authorities partners in Greater Manchester; and, with colleagues, Andrew is developing the use of mobile technologies to enhance student experience and university processes for large undergraduate programmes.
Andrew teaches and is a unit lead on the Masters in Social Work at the University of Manchester and delivers workshops for the PGR programme in the Division of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work; additionally Andrew is Academic Lead for eLearning in the School of Health Sciences.

The output of the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) Grant: The OPIS (On-line Parent Information and Support) project - Meeting mothers' and fathers' information and support needs for home-based management of childhood chronic kidney disease became part of standard practice and offered to all patients in the Nephrology department at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.
Also as part of my work with the MREH (CMFT/MIMIT Clinical Need Award) I worked with the Trust IT departments to develop protocols for the use of mobile devices linked to the secure Trust patient records system. This resulted in a mobile application for children with Kerato-conjunctivitis, through which they can report live changes against a range of quality of life measure. The patient reported data is intergrated with the patient record and presented to clinicians, and view in conjunction with other patient data including: results, appointment type, comorbidity, symptoms, findings, visual acuity, IOP R/L, investigations, allergens, history of prescribed medications, therapies received/recommended, outcomes, comments, present QOL, 5-5-5 Total R / L, medication score and issues.
Through my work with the Greater Manchester Social Work Academy (GMSWA) teaching partnership a step change in the adoption of digital technologies has been achieved including:
- The standardised of Professional and Development Career Portfolios (PDCP) across the teaching partnership (3 HEIs and 27 local authorities)
- The adoption of a digital PDCP used by all GMSWA students (post graduate and undergraduate) during the academic year 2016/17 and this will continue for each forth coming cohort.
- Restructuring of Academic Advisor meetings to be driven by the digital PDCP.
- Provision to allGMSWA students of a lifelong licience to use their personal ePortfolio.
- Embedding the ePortfolio system in standard University processes.
