He spent twenty seven years at The University of Manchester’s Faculty of Science and Engineering and was confirmed as Professor Emeritus in 2017 and since then has acted as the strategic lead for the development of the University of Cumbria’s Industrial Strategy, particularly focusing on public and private sectors, along with employers and stakeholders relevant to both Cumbria, Lancashire and Borderlands.
With a background in creating opportunities, such as the successful delivery of the Project Academy for Sellafield, worth over £13.2m and the development of project management master classes for managers in Rwanda, Brazil, Vietnam, Singapore and the UK.
His academic and research interests are strategic planning for infrastruture, people and organisations and project processes in art and design projects.
At Manchester he was leader of the Management of Projects Research Group and founding academic for the MSc Project Management Professional Development Programme (PMPDP), a flexible modular programme led by an industrial consortium comprising: Rolls-Royce, AMEC, AEC, Sellafield, E.on and others. He was lead academic in the UoM for the British University in Dubai (BUiD) Partnership.
Professor Gale is a graduate of Brunel University and the University of Bath. He spent 13 years in industry, in the UK and Middle East, prior to beginning an academic career in 1985. He is a Chartered Civil Engineer, with significant experience in collaborating with industry, including Russian and Singaporean higher education institutions in the development of masters education for engineers and project managers.
He is a past member of the Senate of BUiD and was, for nine years, Co-Vice-Chair of the Global Accreditation Center - Project Management Institute in the United States. He is Visiting Professor to the School of Engineering and Built Environment, Glasgow Caledonian University and past member of the Nuclear Industry Council Trade and Investment Working Group.
He is currently External Examiner for the MSc Project Management programme at Lancaster University Management School.
