Biography
Andrew Sherry is Professor of Materials and Structures at the Henry Royce Institute for Advanced Materials at the University of Manchester. He has experience leading science & innovation, skills development, and infrastructure programmes across industry, national laboratories and academia. He was previously Chief Scientist and Special Advisor at the UK’s National Nuclear Laboratory.
He provides independent expert advice on the strategic, technical and safety aspects of nuclear power to government, industry and international organisations. His research interests lie in materials, structural integrity, and data-centric engineering.
In 2020, he launched the ‘Becoming Me’ programme and the podcast ‘Are We Nearly There Yet?’ to support young professionals on their career journeys.
Andrew is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Nuclear Institute and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. In 2011, Andrew was presented with the Queen's Anniversary Prize for the Dalton Nuclear Institute at Manchester. In 2019, Andrew received the Nuclear Institute’s Hinton Award in recognition of his contribution to the industry.
He is married with two daughters, a member of Ivy Church and enjoys music, cycling and walking.
Research interests
Professor Sherry’s main research interests are in structural and fuel materials for nuclear power, structural integrity assessment, and data-centric engineering. He has made particular contributions to the mechanistic understanding and predictive modelling of fatigue and fracture of structural materials and welds.
