Anna Strowe

I have a wide range of research interests, but generally speaking, my starting point is usually translation theory. There are strong threads through my work of the intersection between translation and ideology or politics; and the production and reception of early modern literature through translation, including material aspects and approaches relating to book history. More recently, I am moving towards research on translation as a research method used in other disciplines, including the epistemological implications as well as the practicalities for research training.

I have supervised and co-supervised PhD projects dealing with a variety of different languages, including Chinese, Arabic, Italian, Spanish, and Polish as well as theoretical perspectives and research methods including comparative textual analysis, discourse analysis, feminist translation theory, practice theory, and narrative theory. In general, I am looking for prospective PGRs in areas of literary or other cultural text translation, with a focus on social, political, ideological, or other broad implications. I also have a particular interest in work involving translation history and archival research.

I teach primarily on the MA in Translation and Intercultural Studies (MATIS). My subject area focuses are translation theory, literary translation, and translation for creative industries more broadly. I also tutor students who are working from Italian and Spanish into English on any practical course units on the MA. I also supervise MATIS dissertations, and have sometimes served as the programme dissertation coordinator.
