Antonia Sarri

Antonia Sarri is Research Associate in the AHRC project Ancient Letter Collections at the University of Manchester, Department of Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology, co-authoring with R. Gibson and A. Morrison two monographs on Ancient Letter Collections. The main object of her research is to identify and collect all the Ancient Greek and Latin letter collections from the earliest available evidence (ca. 4th c. BC) up to ca. 410 C.E. and then examine how they have been transmitted in medieval manuscripts, especially how the letters in each collection were arranged in the manuscripts — which is often very different from their order in modern editions (with relevant implications on how letter collections used to be read in antiquity and how nowadays etc.).

Before that she worked as Research Fellow at the University of Heidelberg, Institute for Papyrology, where she wrote a monograph entitled Material Aspects of Letter Writing in the Graeco-Roman World (C. 500 BC-C. AD 300). She holds a PhD in Papyrology from University College London, where she studied with a PhD scholarship from IKY. Her PhD thesis is a collection of editions of new literary and documentary papyri from Oxyrhynchus. She has an MA in Classics from University College London and a first class honours degree in Classical Philology from the University of Athens.
