Biography:

Anupam has over twenty years of experience as a researcher, educator and consultant. Prior to joining Manchester, he was a Professor at the Henley Business School/University of Reading (2010-19), and worked in non-academic roles at Deloitte and the National Association of Home Builders (US). He holds UG, PG and PhD degrees in Economics.

Anupam's research themes/sub-themes are: economics of property markets; regional and urban studies; household sentiment & behaviours; cross-border investment; Environment, Social & Governance (ESG) and technology issues in urban and property markets; impact of infrastructure projects. Anupam's current teaching unit is: Advanced Real Estate Finance (PG level).

Exploring the role of information asymmetry in property market has been one of the key themes of Anupam’s research over the years: for example, studies on the property condition disclosure law in the United States (refer to 1, 2), leading to a similar study in the Indian context (refer to 3);  sentiment and investor behaviour in the property market (refer to 1, 2, 3). In recent years, Anupam’s work has also focused on the impact of climate change and ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) issues in the property market (refer to 1,  2,  3,  4, 5, 6). 

His academic papers have been published in several top international journals e.g. Journal of Urban Economics, Energy Economics, Regional Studies, Journal of Public Economics, Real Estate Economics, Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics, Applied Geography, Energy Policy, Manchester School, Review of International Economics, World Economy,  Applied Linguistics, Journal of Portfolio Management, Journal of Real Estate Research, Town Planning Review etc.

As an economist, he has analysed various aspects of the real estate sector, applying approaches from a number of sub-fields of Economic Science, such as:

  • Applied Microeconomics & Industrial Organization information economics (asymmetric information and market sentiment in real estate and urban markets); real estate firm operations & performance; market structure and firm concentration in real estate;  evaluation of national and sub-national housing regulations and policies; market benchmarking e.g. building and analysing house price indices; 
  • Organizational Economicsagency problems in real estate brokerage; service standards in real estate intermediaries; corporate social responsibility/ESG of real estate firms; 
  • International Economics & Businesscross-border investment (FDI/FPI) in real estate; transmission mechanisms and contagion in housing markets; analysis of global real estate investment vehicles and delivery platforms; links between macroeconomy and real estate

Anupam's projects have been sponsored/funded by both UK and international public and private funding bodies and companies e.g. UKRI/ESRC, UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Investment Property Forum (IPF), Real Estate Research Institute (RERI) in USA, The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Anupam has undertaken research projects or supervised doctoral works related to several countries such as United States, United Kingdom, India, Greece and other EU countries. 

Anupam chairs the refereed section of the annual conference of the European Real Estate Society.  He is a member of the Editorial board at a number of leading real estate journals e.g. Journal of Real Estate Research; Journal of Real Estate Portfolio Management; International Journal of Strategic Property Management, among others.
