Personal profile

Biography

I joined the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine in November 2023 as Professor of Health History. I have worked in a number of universities across the UK, most recently the University of Huddersfield where I was, at various times, Professor of Health History, Head of Department, Director of Research and, briefly, acting Dean. I am part time , mainly focusing on directing my COST Action grant, National, International and Transnational Histories of Healthcare, 1850-2000 (EuroHealthHist).

I am an historian of health who focuses on the development of hospitals, especially their finance, management and control, with my original research focusing on cities in northern England. This has led a range of grants and publications culminating in a book, The Politics of Hospital Provision in Early Twentieth Century Britain. I am very interested in comparative history, completing projects on hospitals in England and France and in Central Europe between the wars. My current interest is in the development of healthcare in colonial and post-colonial British and French West Africa in the twentieth century. In addition to the COST project and research on West Africa, I will be working on a book on First Aid in Britain and France in the Twentieth Century with a colleague, Dr Rosemary Cresswell, of Strathclyde University.

When I’m not working I enjoy walking and I'm a member of a local walking group. I live in North Yorkshire, surrounded by beautiful countryside and many great walking opportunities. I’m also involved in local politics and in a range of activities in my village including the Local History Group and the community Sports and Social Club.
