Personal profile

Biography

Yuze Huang is a Lecturer in Sustainable Laser Manufacturing, specialising in Additive Manufacturing and Welding, at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, University of Manchester.

He joined the university in June 2025. Prior to that, he was a Lecturer (assistant professor) at Lancaster University, UK. He obtained his PhD degree from the University of Waterloo, Canada, in the year of 2019. He has also held a postdoctoral position at the University College London (2019-2022), contributing to two large projects (US-Office of Naval Research Grant N62909-19-1-2109 and UK-EPSRC via MAPP: EP/P006566/1).

His principal research interests, in respect of which he has co-authored over 30 journal papers, lie in the areas of metal additive manufacturing, laser materials processing, welding and magnetic levitation. In particular, through his involvement in the research projects, he has proposed the keyhole fluctuation and pore formation mechanisms during Laser Powder-bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing, and has developed time-efficient physics models for the Laser Direct Energy Deposition Additive Manufacturing.

He is a member of the EPSRC Peer Review College, the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering (CSME), and Association of Laser Users (AILU). He is an Editorial Board Member of Discover Metals (Springer), also serves as Youth editor for the Journal of Materials Science & Technology, Advanced Materials Joining and has also served as guest editor for Advanced Manufacturing.

Opportunities

Current opportunities for PhD students:

  1. Fully-funded PhD Studentship: Laser direct energy deposition additive manufacturing via advanced laser-matter interactions. The funding covers tuition and a standard tax-free stipend for UK Home applicants. Overseas candidates are welcome but need to secure additional scholarship or self-finance the difference in tuition fees. Link
  2. Fully-funded PhD Studentship (Students Worldwide): Physics-informed and AI-driven digital shadows for laser welding. Funding for this project covers tuition fees, UKRI minimum annual stipend (currently £20,780/annum) and up to a £5k/annum research training support grant for the full duration of the 4-year programme. Link
  3. Self-funded PhD Studentship: Advancing in-process monitoring of laser additive manufacturing.

Yuze is looking for enthusiastic and highly motivated candidates to conduct PhD research. If you are interested in the areas listed in the Research Interests section, please feel free to contact [email protected] for discussion.
