Bielka Carvajal is a PhD student at the Division of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work. Central to Bielka's research is examining the interwoven fabric connecting midwives' sense of self, their clinical practices, and the regulatory landscape of abortion in Chile. By examining the influences that shape midwives' professional identities and guide their actions, she aims to contribute valuable insights into the challenges they face, the dilemmas they navigate, and the potential avenues for harmonising personal values with professional obligations.
As part of her PhD program, Bielka undertook an internship at the Centre for NMAHP Research and Education Excellence Lead (CeNREE) within the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust. During this internship, she focused on producing a rapid review of evidence concerning midwives' working conditions and positive practice environments. Bielka has taken the lead and collaborated on multiple evidence reviews, as well as guidelines, aimed at enhancing midwifery care provision.
Bielka has collaborated with diverse teams on a range of research topics within midwifery and women's health. Her research interests encompass midwives' working conditions, midwives' professional identity, and the provision of midwifery care. With a background in public health, specifically in epidemiology and healthcare institution management, she holds an active position as a lecturer at the University of Chile since 2015.
