Lionheart works on theoretical, numerical and practical aspects of Inverse Problems, mainly in imaging, applied to problems in industry, security, medicine and non-destructive testing.
Lionheart works extensively on Electrical Impedance Tomography, especially on biomedical applications. He works on low frequency electromagnetic detection of objects including landmines and unbexploded ordnance. He also works on X-ray tomography especially for security screening and applications in engineering and materials. Working across synchrotron x-ray , neutron and electron measurements he is especially interested in Rich Tomography problems where the unknown is more than a scalar, including diffraction tomograpahy methods for strain and texture, and polarimetric neutron methods for magnetic fields.
He went to school at Larkmead Comprehensive School in Abingdon in its first comprehensive year, and went on to gain a first class degree in Matheamtics at the University of Warwick in 1983, sharing the prize for top first. He spent two years as a Harkness Fellow at the University of California Berkeley where he passed Candadacy (for PhD) exams in Dynamical Systems and Differential Geometry before taking a position at Oxford Polytechnic in 1985, where he completed a PhD on Image Reconstruction in Electrical Impedance Tomography in 1990. After academic positions at Oxford Polytechnic, and then Oxford Brookes University, he moved to UMIST in 1990, and was promoted to a chair in Applied Mathematics in in 2005 at the newly formed University of Manchester.
Bill Lionheart is Professor of Applied Mathematics and specialises in Inverse Problems. More details can be found on his official academic home page including a fairly complete publications list.
