Research interests

Biyun's research draws on knowledge from multiple disciplines including public policy, international relations, history, and management. She uses cultural policy as a lens to investigate issues in broader fields such as arts organisation governance, creative industries, cultural diplomacy, and soft power. She is particularly interested in international studies that compare the similarities and differences of cultural practices and explore the interaction between governments, organisations, and individuals. Her recent work constructs a multi-level policy design framework to understand, communicate, and inform the practice of cultural diplomacy in a changing international environment.

Biography

Biyun Zhu is a Lecturer in Arts and Cultural Management at the University of Manchester. She received her PhD in Cultural Policy and Arts Management (with a minor in Public Policy and Management) from The Ohio State University. Previously, she earned a master’s degree in Public Policy from King’s College London and a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from the University of International Business and Economics. She has also researched and worked with government and international organizations including the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, PRC, and United Nations. Her research draws on knowledge from multiple disciplines including public policy, international relations, history, and management. She uses cultural policy as a lens to investigate issues in broader fields such as arts organisation governance, creative industries, cultural diplomacy, and soft power. She is particularly interested in international studies that compare the similarities and differences of cultural practices and explore the interaction between governments, organisations, and individuals.
