Biography

I completed my BA in Philosophy in 2015, and my MA in Philosophy in 2017 both at the University of Pavia and IUSS (University School for Advanced Studies), and a post-graduate specialization course in cultural sciences in 2018 at Fondazione Collegio San Carlo (Modena).

My research is funded by the School of Social Sciences (maintenance stipend) and the AHRC (tuition waiver).

Research interests

My research focuses on the problem of the direct object of perception. My aim is to develop a new argument defending our intuitive view that ordinary objects (tri-dimensional objects) are the objects of perception, by refuting the idea that we can only be aware of some sides of them at a time.

I will show that the argument above stems from an abstract and oversimplified conception of perceptual experience; namely, that it consists of a series of “static” images. My claim is that this model of temporal consciousness is phenomenologically inadequate, as in experience we are never aware of static elements. By adopting a retentional theory of time consciousness, I will argue that perceptual experience does not include the “primal impression” only, but a series of past retained impressions and of anticipated ones as well, thus providing evidence in support of the idea that the direct object of perception is nonetheless constituted in this continuum of experiences.

In my research, I hope to establish a productive collaboration between the phenomenological (mainly Husserlian) and the analytical tradition, by making a serious effort to overcome the terminological and conceptual barrier between the two.
