Personal profile
Overview
I am currently a Hallsworth Research Fellow in Political Economy at the Global Development Institute (GDI). My 3-year research project examines processes of land commodification in peri-urban settings in sub-Saharan Africa. I seek to understand the interplay of formal and informal institutions and the transformation of collective property rights in the context of rapid urbanisation.
Prior to this role, I was an LSE Fellow in Global Politics at the Department of Government, and an ESRC postdoctoral fellow at the Department of International Development at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
I completed my PhD at the LSE Department of International Development in 2022. My thesis studied the political economy of large-scale land investments and the diffusion of global governance norms in Uganda and Sierra Leone.
With a background in development studies and social sciences, my research is interdisciplinary in nature and sits at the junction of development studies, political economy, African land politics, and global governance. I am particularly interested in questions of land governance in the context of local and global politics, and the complex relationships between forms of public authority, international policymaking, and colonial legacies. My research so far has been conducted in Uganda and Sierra Leone, but I retain an interest in Kenya from past fieldwork and have recently expanded my research focus to include South Africa.
