She was previously a Lecturer in Criminology and Programme leader for the MA Crime and Justice at the University of Chester, having completed her ESRC-funded PhD at the University of Manchester in 2008. Caroline’s thesis examined substance-related homicide in England and Wales; drawing upon data from the Homicide Index, police files for solved homicide cases and interviews with convicted homicide offenders.
Prior to her PhD Caroline worked as a Research Assistant for the National Confidential Inquiry into Suicide and Homicide by People with Mental Illness and as a Resettlement Officer for Nacro. She obtained her LLB Honours (first class) degree in Law and Criminology and ESRC-funded MA in Criminology and Research Methods (distinction) from Keele University.
Caroline’s research interests incorporate gender-based violence and homicide, with specific interests in homicide, femicide, filial violence (child and adolescent perpetrated violence towards parents), parricide, the abuse of women in public spaces (including women runners), domestic abuse and 'honour'-based abuse.
Caroline’s recent research includes a BA and Leverhulme funded project, 'Non-intimate femicide' (Principle Investigator) with Dr Elizabeth Cook (City St. George's, University of London) and an N8 PRP funded project, 'The abuse of women runners' (Principle Investigator) with Professor Rose Broad (University of Manchester). Prior to this, Caroline was Co-Investigator on ESRC-funded project, ‘Understanding and improving risk assessment in domestic violence’ (with Professor Juanjo Medina-Ariza) and Co-Investigator on an N8-funded project, ‘Early identification of honour-based abuse’ (with Dr Claire Fox, University of Manchester, and West Yorkshire Police). Caroline also collaborates with Professor Rachel Condry (University of Oxford) to research filial violence and parricide, through a gendered lens.
