I am a Professor in Applied Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Manchester. I am also the Group Research Lead for Applied Mathematics. I lecture undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Uncertainty Quantification and Applied Mathematics. My research falls under the themes of Uncertainty Quantification and Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing, with an emphasis on approximation theory associated with finite element modelling, and efficient solvers. I am currently an associate editor for the SIAM/ASA journal on Uncertainty Quantification and the SIAM journal on Numerical Analysis

My research falls under the umbrella of numerical analysis (a branch of applied mathematics) and is centered on approximation schemes and efficient computational tools for finding approximate solutions to partial differential equations (PDEs). The applications I deal with typically give rise to mathematical models consisting of PDEs with uncertain inputs and so I am also interested in Uncertainty Quantification.

I am currently seeking PhD students to work in the following fields:

• numerical solution of PDEs
• numerical solution of stochastic PDEs and/or PDEs with random data
• Uncertainty Quantification
• Numerical linear algebra for PDEs 
• Preconditioning

I am willing to supervise PhD students interested in many aspects of the numerical solution of deterministic and stochastic PDEs including: finite elements, mixed finite elements, error estimation, stochastic finite elements, numerical linear algebra, fast solvers, multigrid methods, and/or preconditioning.
