Personal profile

Biography

PhD, MA Cornell University

I am a film historian and cultural studies scholar with special interests in European life and its Jewish cultures. My work on feature film, video testimony, literary texts and live art has focused on Holocaust representations and the dynamics of modern German-speaking Jewish culture. My recent work has looked at intersectional queer and Jewish portrayals in European, Israeli und US cinema, and at manifestations of Jewish dissidence in Soviet-era Eastern Germany (the GDR).

Before joining the University of Manchester, I was Research Associate and Director of Research and Educational Programmes at the Centre for German-Jewish Studies, University of Sussex. Prior to that I was Research Associate at the Moses Mendelssohn Centre for European-Jewish Studies at the University of Potsdam, where I co-coordinated the first German Holocaust video testimony project, Archiv der Erinnerung (Archive of Memory), in collaboration with the Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies at Yale University.

I have held Visiting Fellowships at leading research institutions including the Moses Mendelssohn Center for European Jewish Studies Potsdam, the Leibniz Institute for Jewish History and Culture – Simon Dubnow in Leipzig, the Selma Stern Center for Jewish Studies Berlin-Brandenburg at Humboldt University Berlin, and the Bucerius Institute at the University of Haifa.

I contributed to the 2023-24 special exhibition Another Country. Jewish in the GDR at the Jewish Museum Berlin with my research expertise on the topic, as well as a personal interview and artefacts related to my family history.
