Overview

I am a Chilean architect specialising in industrial settlements, with a particular focus on buildings and built spaces for large-scale mining operations. Given the evolving nature of industrial operations and extractive logistics, numerous settlements are currently experiencing abandonment and deterioration, consequently compromising their historical significance and social sustainability.

My research and design work focuses on the Chuquicamata mining camp in Chile, critically examining the company town typology and the intricate process of housing camp closure. This research delves deeper into urban development, exploring the nuanced social and community conditions that emerge during periods of transformative change.

My experience of growing up in Chuquicamata and subsequently working at the copper mining company provides me with an empirical and authoritative perspective on community life and the profound operational influences shaping these environments.

My core belief is that adaptive reuse and strategic adaptation generate critical preservation and sustainability initiatives. These approaches not only validate historical narratives but also create transformative development opportunities for buildings, urban spaces, and communities. Through my research in master's and doctoral studies, I have developed a holistic understanding that adaptive reuse projects must be approached from an urban perspective, ensuring continuity through community practices and public spaces—a methodology that connects architectural intervention from the urban scale to the most intricate material details.

I am currently focused on the changes in settlement and territory associated with extractive logistics and operational transformations, arguing that the process of urban discard manifested in these settlements represents a continuous analytical lens that allows us to better comprehend urban dynamics.
