Personal profile

Overview

Charles currently works in the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology, where he has recently started his fellowship on studying the conformational dynamics of proteins called dehydrins within seeds via ion mobility-mass spectrometry.

He has a background in structural biology and protein biochemistry. He studied for his MSci at University College London. In 2016 he joined the research group of Prof. Konstantinos Thalassinos, where he focused on understanding the dynamics of protein misfolding using native mass spectrometry coupled to ion mobility. He started his first postdoctoral research position at the University of Southampton with Prof. Max Crispin, where he used mass spectrometry to understand the glycosylation of the coronaviral spike protein. He joined the University of Manchester in 2022 as a postdoctoral researcher with Prof. Perdita Barran and Prof. Andrew Pitt, in partnership with FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies, where he usesd proteomics and metabolomics to understand the cellular biology of CHO cells in complex bioreactor environments.
