Biography

I am Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at University of Manchester, National Institute for Health Research Advanced Fellow, and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

I qualified in Medicine with Honours from Manchester in 2003. As an undergraduate I completed an intercalated degree in Physiology, graduating with First Class Honours. Following junior clinical posts on the South Manchester medical rotation, I became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) in 2006, and in 2007 started as a NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow and Cardiology Registrar. In 2008 I undertook a cardiovascular magnetic resonance training fellowship at Royal Brompton Hospital. In 2010 I was awarded a NIHR Doctoral Research Fellowship, ‘The diagnosis of cardiac allograft disease using cardiovascular magnetic resonance’. In 2013 I undertook a visiting research fellowship in advanced cardiovascular imaging at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, under Andrew Arai, and was awarded a NIHR Clinical Lectureship. In 2016 I was awarded a NIHR Clinician Scientist Fellowship, ‘Targeting the extracellular matrix to improve the outcome of patients with heart failure’. I completed my clinical cardiology training and was appointed as a Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist in Manchester, established clinical services for patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, and cardiomyopathies, at Wythenshawe Hospital, and became the Cardiovascular Medicine Group Leader in the Wellcome Centre for Cell-Matrix Research. I was awarded the 2020 Michael Davies Early Career Award by the British Cardiovascular Society, which is ‘to honour researchers who have recently established themselves as independent investigators and who have made an outstanding contribution to cardiovascular science’. In 2021 I was awarded a NIHR Advanced Fellowship (senior level), ‘Precision medicine to improve the outcome of patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction’, was appointed as Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine, and elected to FRCP. I co-lead the Living With and Beyond Cancer theme in the NIHR Manchester BRC.

I am Deputy Chair of the NIHR-BHF Cardiovascular Partnership, Director of the BHF Manchester Centre for Heart and Lung Magnetic Resonance Research, and Associate Medical Director for Research and Innovation at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. I am a member of the European Heart Failure Association Scientific Committee for Heart Failure with Preserved and Mildly Reduced Ejection Fraction, the British Society for Heart Failure Research Group and the BHF Clinical Research Collaborative Steering Group. I am immediate Past-Chair of the British Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Research Group, and previously served on the British Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Board.
