My research interests can be generally described as obtaining molecular understanding of radionuclide behaviour in processes that are relevant to the nuclear fuel cycle. This understanding can be used to improve currently established methods or develop novel procedures for the reprocessing, treatment and/or disposal of spent nuclear fuel and residues, and assist in the decommissioning of nuclear sites. Studies involve working with aqueous, organic and ionic melt systems, with particular focus on the transuranic actinides (i.e. Np, Pu, Am).I am interested in applying electrochemical techniques to understand the redox behaviour of radionuclides and my research group extensively uses various spectroscopic and diffraction methods (e.g. electronic absorption, Raman/infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption, electron paramagnetic resonance) to characterise radionuclide species and probe their behaviour. I have collaborated in actinide science with the Institute of Transuranium Elements (ITU-Karlsruhe, Germany), the Institute for Nuclear Waste Disposal (INE-Karlsruhe, Germany), National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL-Sellafield) and Idaho National Lab (INL, USA) and have used synchrotron facilities at ESRF-Grenoble and ANKA-Karlsruhe to determine characteristics of actinide containing materials. I am involved in the ACTINET European collaboration, the EPSRC DIAMOND university consortium (www.diamondconsortium.org) and the Nuclear FiRST Doctoral Training Centre (joint with UoM and Sheffield University).
Current research projects are listed here: 1) Using ligand design to understand the redox properties of actinyls. 2) Studies of actinide ternary species formation in the nuclear fuel cycle. 3) Molecular basis for advanced nuclear fuel separations. 4) Novel approaches for minor actinide/lanthanide separations. 5) New methods for the removal of radionuclides from highly active liquors. 6) Pyrochemical methods for the treatment and disposal of orphan wastes, fuels and residues. 7) Developing high temperature molten salts methods for fuel reprocessing in Gen IV fuel cycles.
There are currently no funded positions available, but I welcome enquiries from prospective postgraduate students interested in any of my research fields.
