I am an interdisciplinary researcher and educator specialising in environmental governance and sustainability across urban and outer space contexts. My work bridges the fields of geography, policy, and environmental studies, with a focus on addressing the interconnected challenges of sustainability in cities transitioning to net-zero carbon futures and the emerging environmental implications of human activities in outer space. As the coordinator of the University of Manchester's Space Sustainability Network, I foster collaborations across disciplines including Geography, Aerospace Engineering, Material Sciences, Astrophysics and GDI to explore innovative solutions to issues such as space debris and satellite governance.
In my teaching, I integrate innovative methods, including 360 videos and collaborative projects, to engage students with real-world sustainability challenges. My modules, Space and Sustainability and Governing Urban Transformations, encourage students to critically examine environmental governance issues at multiple scales and develop practical solutions to complex problems. Whether addressing urban decarbonisation or planetary environmentalism, I teach to inspire the next generation of scholars and practitioners to think creatively and act boldly in the face of global environmental challenges.
My pedagogical approach fosters active, inclusive, and transformative learning environments that connect theory with practice. I emphasise collaborative and research-driven tasks to help students tackle complex, interdisciplinary challenges. I make extensive use of digital tools, including platforms such as Piazza and VoiceThread, to create dynamic, participatory learning spaces and support diverse student needs. I also incorporate use of the Human Geography Virtual Reality Laboratory, where students engage with immersive technologies like YouTube360 to explore virtual environments, enhancing their understanding of complex spatial and environmental concepts. This academic year, as Principal Investigator on a Flexible Learning Programme (FLP) pilot project, I am exploring viva voce group assessments guided by problem-oriented project learning (PPL). The project builds confidence for students while addressing challenges such as overreliance on Artificial Intelligence (AI) by promoting authentic, skill-based learning.
