Dan Scotson is a PhD researcher investigating the failure of corrosion resistant ceramic coatings (Environmental Barrier Coatings - EBCs) for next-generation gas-turbine engines, such as those used in the aerospace and electricity generation sectors.
Investigating materials failure relies upon a wide range of advanced characterisation techniques to better understand what happens to materials in extreme environments. As a result, Dan uses a variety of characterisation techniques such as microscopy and spectroscopy techniques to learn how materials fail.
Dan is a keen user of MATLAB to develop novel methods for data processing and data visualisation. In this area, Dan has recently launched ScaleBarIT - a quick and efficient way to add scale bars to images. The latest version can be found on Dan's GitHub.
Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) for the undergraduate Materials Science and Engineering course. Courses taught include: 1st year MATS15501 Computing and Communication; 2nd year MATS23401 Materials Processing, and 3rd year MATS31301 Composites and Advanced Materials.
Dan is also a Discover Materials ambassador. Discover Materials is a partnership of universities that organise and support outreach activities to promote Materials Science across the UK.
Dan has developed an outreach project titled 'Porosity in Materials' which has been showcased at Discover Materials events including the Big Bang Fair 2023 and Faraday Institution Conference 2023. Details of this can be found here: https://discovermaterials.co.uk/resource/porosity-in-materials/.
