Biography

My research and publications focus upon education policy with a particular emphasis upon professional identities, educational disadvantage and leadership. This research has been funded by agencies including the Economic and Social Research Council, the British Academy, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, the Department for Education and the Department for International Development. One of my more recent research projects funded by the ESRC, 'Distributed Leadership and the Social Practices of School Organisation', has been the prime focus of many of my more recent publications.

I have developed a series of MA programmes targeted at both UK and international education professionals and I currently teach on the MA Education (International) and MA Educational Leadership programmes. I also supervise a number of education policy and educational leadership and management related EdD and PhD students.

Prior to joining the university sector I spent twelve years as a teacher of Economics, Politics and Business Studies in a variety of schools, VI Form Colleges and FE colleges both in the UK and overseas. Most of this time was devoted to teaching, but I also assumed a range of additional roles and responsibilities including running a large Department, serving as an Assistant Principal, writing textbooks and participating in a number of curriculum development projects.

I was appointed Head of the Manchester Institute of Education in July, 2013.
