Overview

David Bailey took his B.A. and M.Phil degrees at the University of Cambridge, specialising in Lusophone literature.  He recently completed his Ph.D at Cambridge with the title "Naturalism Against Nature: Kinship and Degeneracy in Fin-de-siècle Portugal and Brazil", which looks at how Naturalist literature in Portuguese works against the so-called "scientific" approach to writing, deconstructing notions of race, kinship and sexuality to trouble power structures in the Western world.  He has published articles on Eça de Queirós, Adolfo Caminha, and is now working on street art and gentrification in contemporary Lisbon.  His research interests include the nineteenth-century novel, popular culture, the modern city, postcolonial studies, and intersectional approaches to queer studies.  He joined SPLAS in January 2017.
