Overview

Dillon is a Bicentennary Research Fellow in the Politics Department and the Political Economy Centre researching the global political economy of sovereign debt. 

Prior to this, he was SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow at the Sheffield Political Economy Research Institute (SPERI), where he led the British Political Economy Research Network.

He completed his PhD at York University in Toronto, Canada in 2023. His thesis examined the governance of Anglo-American capitalism in the US and Britain from the early-twentieth century through the 2008 global financial crisis. 

His research draws on critical political economy and focuses broadly on the politics of macroeconomic governance and the relationship between capitalism and democracy. He has explored these themes in relation to:

-technocratic governance and the depoliticisation of macroeconomic policy 

-the history and politics of monetary and fiscal crisis 

-social democracy and centre-left economic policy 

-the politics of the welfare state 

-Gramscian social theory and Marxist state theory

His research has appeared in leading political economy and political science journals such as New Political Economy, Theory & Society, British Journal of Politics and International Relations, Critical Sociology, and British Politics.

He is the author of a forthcoming volume on the political economy of capitalist crises with Palgrave Macmillan and his book on the political economy of Anglo-American capitalism is currently under review at Cambridge University Press
