Overview

Dongyang Mi is a President's Doctoral Researcher at the University of Manchester, while he is PhD Candidate in the joint-PhD programme under the GOLDEN (Global Doctoral Research Network) Partnerships through the Universities of Manchester and Melbourne. He is the associated researcher/assistant at Urban Studies Lab (Susinfra) and the Cottonopolis Collective Project. He is also a Teaching Assistant and Academic Tutor at School of Environment, Education and Development (SEED), University of Manchester and Asia Institute, Faculty of Arts, University of Melbourne.

He is a member of the Society and Environment Research Group (SERG) and the Cities, Politics and Economies Research Group (CPEG), and Sustainable Consumption Institute(SCI) at the University of Manchester; and member and officer of The Chinese Studies Research Group (CSRG) in Centre for Contemporary Chinese Studies(CCCS) at the University of Melbourne. 

He is completing the PhD research project examining sustainable transitions of practices, infrastructures, and dynamic socio-material patterns of cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation across Chinese cities, supervised by Prof Dr Alison Browne, Prof Dr Deljana Iossifova, Prof Dr Saska Petrova (Manchester) and A/Prof Dr Sarah Rogers, Prof Dr Mark Wang (Melbourne). His research areas are environmental change, urban political ecology, social practice, and urban geography. His main research interests lie at the intersection of Water Sanitation and Hygiene(WASH), sustainable practices and infrastructure, urban governance and transformation in Chinese and other Global South cities. 

Dongyang is one of the initiators/Principal Investigators (PIs) of the China Water Network supported by the Global Scholar Funds (22-23, 23-24, 24-25), University of Manchester, with the partnership of University of Melbourne, establishing interdisciplinary and global connections among scholars focused on Chinese water research topics.

Dongyang Mi is also an architect, urbanist, and designer, based in the UK, China, and Australia. Before joining the University of Manchester and the University of Melbourne, he was a Research Assistant at the Department of Urban and Rural Planning affiliated with Hunan University, China. Dongyang holds an MA degree from RCA (Royal College of Art, London, UK), BA and BEng in HUST (Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China).
