Research interests

I work in three main areas: political philosophy, the history of philosophy (including the history of political thought); and moral philosophy.

Biography

I am Professor of Political Philosophy and President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Manchester, having joined on 1 August, 2024.  

Prior to this, I taught in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Sydney, including serving as Head of the School of Humanities, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research). I have also held positions at the Australian National University, the University of York (UK), and the University of Toronto. Most recently, I was Visiting Professor of Philosopy at the ANU (July 2023) and an Academic Visitory at Nuffield College, Oxford (September-December 2023).
