Personal profile

Overview

I am a Senior Lecturer in Education. I am a former citizenship and social studies teacher. Since compleating my PhD at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (Spain) (founded by the Spanish Ministry of Education), my research has primarily focused on issues related to citizenship, democratic, and social studies education. My work is internationally framed, theoretically and socially driven – I aim to conceptualise and empirically examine how education re/produces and/or challenges political inequalities.

I have published more than 40 book, chapters, and journal articles in multiples languages. Among them, my 2019 review on ‘democratic education’ published in Review of Educational Research has been downloaded more than 50,000 times and my 2016 co-authored article on citizenship education was awarded the Children’s Identity and Citizenship European Association Best Publication Award (2015). I have recently published a monograph entitled ‘Political Education in Times of Populism’ (for reviews, see https://doi.org/10.1080/00933104.2022.2078939; https://democracyeducationjournal.org/home/vol31/iss2/6/).

I have participated/lead numerous research projects related to democratic and political education. I recently finished my work on a project co-funded by the Council of Europe and the European Union on the embedment of competences for democratic culture in primary teacher education. Currently, I act as a contracted expert for the Education For Democracy Horizon Project "AECED: Transforming Education for Democracy through Aesthetic and Embodied Collaborative Learning, Responsive Pedagogies and Democracy-as-becoming".

My work has informed educational policy, practice and public debate nationally and internationally. For instance, in 2018, the Ombudsman of Catalonia (Spain) used our 2015 book as a framework to investigate whether the political situation in the region has threatened political pluralism within schools. My publications have been repeatedly used to examine the Implementation of citizenship education actions in the EU. I have led and/or participating in the writing of teaching resources that are used internationally (see, as an example, our Promoting Democracy in the Classroom MOOC and associated teaching resources). I am currently a member of the academic advisory board for the UK’s All-Party Parliamentary Group on Political Literacy .
