My doctoral thesis investigates how Endō Shūsaku’s historical novel Silence (1966) and its different iterations have addressed and elicited historical discourses and practices in relation to the history of Christianity in Japan at both construction and reception levels. Deploying approaches from Public History, Media Studies, Adaptation Studies, and Audience Reception Studies along with historical research, the overall thesis demonstrates the processes by which Silence — constructed, circulated, and consumed by the public — encourages people to engage with the past in distinctive ways and gains cultural, religious, and political meanings in different contexts.
I have worked as Graduate Teaching Assistant for the course "History in Practice".
