Personal profile

Overview

I am a Postgraduate Doctoral Researcher in History at the University of Manchester, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council North West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership (AHRC NWCDTP).

My PhD project, titled Early Modern Ottoman Parenthood: Emotions, Family, and Law in Eighteenth-Century Istanbul, explores the world of early modern Ottoman society, focusing on the experiences of parents and the concept of parenthood within both social, legal and medical contexts. The sources encompass the eighteenth-century court records from Istanbul and legal opinions, with its methodology of socio-legal analysis. I prioritise the use of original copies of eighteenth-century Ottoman manuscripts, which is one of the main pillars of my thesis. Using eighteenth-century Ottoman medical treatises situates the discussion in terms of the theoretical and practical aspects of parenting and childcare in the early modern world through the relationship between body and emotion. My supervisory team for this thesis consists of Professor Stefan Hanß, Dr Ethan Menchinger, Dr Roy Bar Sadeh, and Professor Hannah Barker.

I have conducted a nine-month fieldwork in manuscript libraries in Istanbul and Ankara, Turkey, with the generous support of the AHRC NWCDTP under the Fieldwork and Conference Fund (RTSG).
