PhD in Management Science, Prof
Dr Fahian Huq is a Chair in Operations and Supply Chain Management and serves as the Head of the Management Sciences Group at the Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS). Professor Huq completed his Ph.D. in Management Science at Lancaster University, where he was awarded the highly competitive Lancaster University Management School Doctoral Studentship. He also holds a Master of Science in Supply Chain and Operations Management from Nottingham University Business School, which he pursued under the prestigious Developing Solutions Scholarship.
At the forefront of his research interests is sustainable supply chain management, risk in supply chains, and innovative operations management practices in emerging economies. Professor Huq's research findings have been published in world-elite journals such as the Journal of Operations Management (FT50) and Journal of Business Ethics (FT50). He is a member of the Editorial Review Board of the International Journal of Operations & Production Management (CABS4) and a guest editor for the premier ethics journal, the Journal of Business Ethics (FT50), where he is currently overseeing a Special Issue on "Fashionable ethics?"
Professor Huq's contributions to research have been acknowledged through various research grants. He has successfully attracted funding exceeding £600,000, including grants from Innovate UK's highly competitive 'Smart Grant' program and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada's "Insight Grant."
Professor Huq is globally recognized as an expert in his field and actively contributes to the academic community. He holds memberships in scientific and advisory committees of various international conferences and associations. In addition to his scholarly contributions, Professor Huq is committed to sharing his insights with a wider audience. He has authored practitioner articles based on his research for reputable publications such as Forbes, CIPS, Retail Times, Retail Gazette, and Logistics Voices. Through these publications, he effectively disseminates his research and provides thought leadership to diverse stakeholders.
Professor Huq currently holds the position of Head of the Management Science Group at AMBS, where he provides academic, strategic, and managerial leadership. Previously, from 2018 to 2021, he served as the Programme Director of the highly acclaimed MSc in Operations, Projects, and SCM. Under his guidance, the program achieved remarkable recognition, securing the top position in the UK and fifth globally in the QS Rankings of supply chain management programs.
As an educator, Professor Huq has developed and taught courses at multiple levels, ranging from undergraduate to executive education. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and his teaching expertise encompasses subjects such as Operations Management and Strategy, Sustainable Supply Chain Management, and Ethical Sourcing. His dedication to pedagogy has garnered multiple recognitions for Excellence in Teaching.
Beyond academia, Professor Huq has gained valuable practical experience working in the manufacturing and service sectors of Bangladesh. He co-founded Everbest, a pioneering ladder manufacturing company in Bangladesh, and Talents-in-Tandem, a business process outsourcing services solutions provider. These endeavours have provided him with first-hand insights into real-world challenges and opportunities, enriching his research and teaching with practical perspectives.
Fahian's main research interests lie in sustainable supply chain management, risk in supply chains, supply chain configuration, service operations and innovative operations management practices in emerging economies.
My areas of interest for PhD supervision include:
Sustainable Supply Chain Management: Exploring the integration of sustainability principles and practices into supply chain operations.
Risk Management in Supply Chains: Investigating the vulnerabilities in supply chains and devising strategies to mitigate potential risks.
Supply Chain Configuration: Delving into the structural design and alignment of supply chain processes to enhance efficiency and responsiveness.
Innovative Operations and SCM Practices in Emerging Economies: Understanding the unique challenges and opportunities presented by emerging markets and how innovative practices can be tailored to these contexts.
Challenges in Procurement: Examining the complexities and evolving nature of procurement practices in the modern global landscape.
Technological Impact on Operations and SCM: Assessing the transformative role of technology, especially in areas like automation, AI, and data analytics, on supply chain and operations management.
Prospective PhD students passionate about these domains are encouraged to reach out for potential research collaborations. It is worth noting that my primary methodological strength lies in qualitative case study design, offering a deep, nuanced exploration of real-world scenarios.
