Overview

I am based at the Management, Governance and Development (MGD) cluster at Global Development Institute (GDI). In addition to research, the MGD cluster manages the following reputed MSc programmes at GDI: MSc Human Resource Management (International Development); MSc Organisational Change and Development; and MSc Management and Implementation of Development Projects.

Prior to joining the University of Manchester in January 2006, I have held various academic positions at the School of Management, University of Tampere and the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy: Social and Public Policy, University of Jyväskylä, both in Finland and at the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA), University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. I have also served as a visiting scholar in a number of foreign universities including the University of Helsinki in Finland, the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh and the University of Namibia in Southern Africa.

Over the years, I have extensively engaged with the PhD programme in Development Policy and Management at GDI/SEED and have supervised a large number of PhD students to successful completion. Besides teaching and research, I am the Programme Director of the MSc Human Resource Management (International Development).

Outside Manchester, I also examine PhDs  and serve as External Examiner to a number of postgraduate programmes in the UK and abroad. For further details regarding my academic and professional expertise please see the relevant information below.

My research publication ranges from peer-reviewed journal articles to other forms of academic and policy oriented publications in the multi-disciplinary areas of public administration, development management and international development. Over the years I have made research contributions in the thematic areas of administrative culture, public sector reform, decentralisation and local governance, NGO management, organisational behaviour and HRM, and policy and organisational aspects of microfinance institutions. In addition, four of my recent books were published by Routledge in their research series in development economics and public administration and management.

I have extensively supervised PhD students in the multi-disciplinary areas of my research expertise and shall be pleased to receive research proposals for consideration from prospective PhD candidates that fit with my research interests.
