Personal profile

Overview

I am a Lecturer in Education, and deputy programme director for MA Digital Technologies, Communication and Education. My teaching and research focus on the use of digital technologies in teaching, learning and teacher education, especially in under-resourced contexts. I am also interested in how educational policies and their implementation shape technology-mediated educational provisions in their contexts. I am currently pursuing a growing interest in how pervasive AI in education may affect efforts to address existing digital inequity and inequality in different educational settings.

I have previously served as Senior Tutor in Digital Education and a Programme Director for the MA DTCE-Distance Learning. I was also a Commonwealth scholar at the University of Manchester between 2017-2020.

Before joining the University of Manchester, I worked as lecturer in English and Communication skills. I have also worked as an in-service and pre-service teacher educator and teacher-trainer in Rwanda. I worked on various donor-funded in-service teacher development projects, including those funded by the British Council, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Belgian technical cooperation program PAFP (Programme d’Appui pour la Formation Professionelle). I have also worked on teacher development projects in Senegal and Cote d'Ivoire.

Teaching

I work on a range of course units in the department, mainly those on the MA TESOL and MA Digital Technologogy Communication and Education.

Some of the course units I am currently teaching or have previously taught include  Digital Technologies in Education; and Digital Education Research, Learning Design and technology Practices, Multimedia Design and Development; Blended Learning in a Digital Age; Language learning and technology; Teaching and Learning online.

I am currently working on a Flexible Learning pilot that trials the use of digital badges in teaching and formative assessments. The aim of the project is to understand how these micro-credentials can be used to enhance students' engagement and career prospects.

Research interests

My research interests sit broadly in the area of digital education. I am interested in researching how digital education is deployed in under-resourced contexts and how such deployment is enabled or hindered by in-context educational policies and practices. Given my own experience as a language teacher and teacher educator, my research interests also include the use of digital technologies in language teaching and teacher professional development.

Key topics of interest are:

  • Processes and challenges in digital education provision in under-resourced or challenging contexts
  • Impact of novel digital technologies (e.g. generative AI) in creating or reducing digital inequalities in under-resourced educational contexts;
  • Shaping influences of in-context digital education policies and practices on teacher identity, classrrom practices and professional development.
  • Using digital technologies to support language learning and teaching

My research approach is mainly qualitative and I tend to use discourse analysis approaches in my work. I am currently wroking with Positioning Theory in my research work.
