Overview

Frank Podd studied at The University of Surrey in Guildford where he completed three degrees: a BSc in Theoretical Physics, an MSc in Signal Processing and Machine Intelligence, and a PhD titled Medical X-Ray Dose Reduction by Adaptive Image Processing. For the industrial year of his BSc, he worked in JET Nuclear Fusion Laboratory,

He has worked in SMEs as a software and electronics engineer (Rinicom, Industrial Tomography Systems, and Uniscan), as well as running his own research consultancy company (Tomography Limited).

He has held numerous post-doctoral positions at the Universities of Leeds and Manchester that covered most forms of tomographic imaging, from capacitance through to x-ray. He also created ultrasound devices for investigating sewers, obstetrics, and industrial processes. 

He currently works as a lecturer in Microcontroller Engineering 1, and the Embedded Systems Buggy Project. He is also working with companies including Lucid Innovations and Extronics.  His research areas include landmine detection using GPR, e-Agri using resistance tomography and GPR, and security screening using radar. He is also interested in creating autonomous robotic platforms to enhance these research areas.
