Personal profile
Research interests
I have interests in most areas of philosophy and religion, but special regard goes to Indian Buddhism (especially Nagarjuna and Vasubandhu), Advaita Vedānta (especially Gaudapada and Sankara), Jainism (especially around the conception of 'truth'), Classical Sanskrit, Pāli. I retain interests in religious and mystical thinkers of all stripes: my interest in religion and philosophy is mainly in their potential as guides for living well.
I am also interested in classical Chinese philosophy (especially Zhuangzi), and in Tolstoy's conception of 'religion' and his consequent expression of 'ultimate truths'. I suppose that you might say that I really work at the intersections of ethics, metaphysics, and religion.
Teaching
From 2016-2020, I taught across the spectrum in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Liverpool.
In 2018-19, I lectured at Liverpool Hope University on their third year Advanced Studies in Indic Traditions course (this comprised Contemporary Buddhism and Contemporary Hinduism, respectively).
In the 2020-21 academic year, I completed a PGCE in religion at Pembroke College, University of Oxford and taught across all secondary key stages at Cherwell School.
Between April-May 2021, I also taught remotely a first year undergraduate module on Hinduism for Liverpool Hope University, covering a staff illness.
In 2023 I returned to Liverpool Hope on a part-time basis to lecture in Hindu and Jaina religous/philosophical traditions.
