Ge graduated BSc in Materials Science and Engineering (2011) from the Shandong University (China) and MSc in Advanced Engineering Materials (2012) from the University of Manchester. Then he obtained his PhD in Electroceramics (2016) from the University of Manchester, followed by a 7-month industrial internship in a university spin-out company, Ionix Advanced Technologies, as a ceramic engineer. He joined the Functional Materials and Devices group at the University of Sheffield as a Research Associate in 2017 and recently was awarded Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw Fellowships at the Department of Materials, University of Manchester. His planned research at Manchester sits between the Department of Materials and Henry Royce institute focusing on developing sustainable materials and manufacturing next-generation of energy storage devices, including energy-density multilayer ceramic capacitors, all solid-state battery and energy harvesting devices.
I am currently the Deputy research lead for Nano and Functional Materials. My research is focused on development (synthesis and characterisation) of high-performance functional ceramics, including piezoelectrics, ferroelectrics, relaxors, energy density dielectrics, microwave dielectrics, ionic conductors, all Li/Na solid-state electrolytes and high entropy perovskite oxides, using skillset ranging from crystal chemistry and crystallography to advanced processing of ceramics and prototype devices.
For materials innovation, I have employed a combination of 'in-situ' poling synchrotron x-ray diffraction and total scattering methods to underpin the origin of high performance piezoelectrics, ferroelectrics and dielectrics, providing new insights of optimisation strategies to guide future research. Besides, I have also expressed extensive interests in exploring and validating sustainable thick-film fabrication techniques for transferring functional materials into device prototypes, such as multilayer ceramic capacitors, multilayer actuators, fuel cell and solid-state battery.
Current research projects are concerned with lead-free piezoelectric ceramics, high energy-density dielectrics, multilayer ceramic capacitors and all Li/Na solid-state battery.
Students who wish to join my group for PhD programs at University of Manchester please send a cover letter expressing their research interest, along with an academic CV and transcript to [email protected]. Funded PhD studentships are available in the departmental CDT/DTA studentships, University of Manchester-CSC joint scholarship, Presidential/Dean's scholarships and other international scholarships.
PhD, postdoc, visiting students (6-24 months) and visiting scholar (12-24 months) candidates are welcome to contact me and discuss the possibility of joining my group and carrying out research activities at University of Manchester.
National and international academic/industrial research collaborations on above research areas are welcome to contact me via [email protected].
