2008-2012 Research Group Leader, group 'Trading Diasporas in the Eastern Mediterranean (1250-1450)', Transcultural Studies, Universität Heidelberg (associated with Graduate School MathComp, founding member Heidelberg Centre for the Environment (HCE); founder and coordinator of Methods and Application Collegium (MAK)

2006-2008  UN military observer in the Middle East with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO). Deputy chief Joint Mission Analysis Centre (JMAC) at HQ Jerusalem. Awarded Head of Mission Commendation.

  • Long distance trade – especially in the eastern Mediterranean but also beyond: Maritime Silk road, Hanseatic League from 1200-1500 and longue durée
  • Layered statehood, city states, maritime empires – international systems and commercial diplomacy in the premodern period (and longue durée)
  • Mamluk and more generally Middle Eastern history (incl Ottomans, modern Israel/Palestine)- mainly economic but also political, diplomatic
  • Eastern Mediterranean (medieval and early modern and beyond), including Venice and the Venetian domains – mainly economic, political, diplomatic history
  • Climate change and processes of adaption in the late Middle Ages and in the longue durée – historical sustainability research
  • News- and knowledge management in the late medieval and early modern period (and longue durée)
  • Digital humanities (corpus analysis, historical news analysis, geo-visioning)
  • Military and naval history, piracy
  • Trading diasporas in the late medieval and early modern periods (and beyond)
