Hayato is a PhD researcher in Human Geography, whose MSc and PhD at Manchester are funded by Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO; an independent administrative agency of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan)
Hayato's research revolves around energy democracy, energy communities, and energy poverty with a specific focus on the issues in Japan. His PhD supervisors are Prof Stefan Bouzarovski and Dr Saska Petrova
