Personal profile

Research interests

I am Professor of Evidence Based Healthcare (since 2003) and Emeritus Co-ordinating Editor of the international Cochrane Oral Health Group.

I have a strong international reputation as a proponent of evidence based oral care.  This follows from my background as a medical statistician involved in clinical trials and undertaking over 20 Cochrane systematic reviews in oral health.  Two recently completed NIHR clinical trials include: QuaD - assessing the value of scale and polish treatments, and oral health advice to regularly attending patients, and INTERVAL - addressing how frequently you should go for a dental check-up.

As an acknowledgment of my contribution to the dental profession, mainly through my Cochrane work, I have been made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, and have been awarded a BDA Thomas medal by the British Dental Association.

My collaborations

I collaborate with members of the Cochrane Oral Health Group Editorial Team (Jan Clarkson, Luisa Fernandez, Phil Riley, Anne-Marie Glenny, Anne Littlewood, Laura MacDonald, Tanya Walsh). I  collaborate externally with Marco Esposito (Italy), Valeria Marhino (Brazil), Edward Lo, May Wong (University of Hong Kong), Tina Poklepovic (Croatia).
