Overview

Hussein M. Sulieman Tahir is a Sponsored Researcher at the Global Development Institute, University of Manchester, and Professor at the Centre for Remote Sensing and GIS, University of Gadarif, Sudan. His research sits at the intersection of remote sensing and GIS, natural resource management, rainfed agricultural systems, pastoralism, climate change, land degradation, and conflict-driven land use dynamics, with a strong emphasis on fragile and conflict-affected settings. He completed his PhD (Dr. rer. nat.) in Natural Sciences at Dresden University of Technology, Germany, in 2007.

His current research focuses on conflict-driven land use dynamics in Sudan and its implications for sustainable recovery and peacebuilding. This work examines how armed conflict is reshaping land use systems, agricultural livelihoods, pastoral mobility, and access to natural resources, and considers how these changes can inform more sustainable recovery pathways and peacebuilding efforts in Sudan.

His work combines geospatial analysis with interdisciplinary field-based research to examine how environmental change, conflict, and livelihood systems interact, particularly in Sudan and the wider Sahel.

He has held visiting academic positions as Visiting Fellow at the Feinstein International Center, Tufts University; Visiting Fellow at Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI), Bergen, Norway; and Visiting Scholar at the Watson Institute for International Studies, Brown University, USA.

Hussein has authored more than 70 publications, including journal articles, book chapters, reports, and policy briefs. His work has appeared in outlets such as Land Use Policy, Journal of Arid Environments, International Journal of Remote Sensing, Nomadic Peoples, Rangelands, Journal of Rural Studies, and Disasters. His publications address topics including pastoralist mobility, land use change, climate adaptation, rangeland transformation, and the environmental dimensions of conflict.
