Biography

I am a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in the Materials, Devices and Systems (MDS) Research Division in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and full member of the Photon Science Institute at the University of Manchester. My current research interests cover a wide range; from silicon photonics for devices with applications in evanescent wave-guide sensing, improved efficiency photo-voltaic (solar) cells and high efficiency LED/laser materials to the fundamental physics of exotic forms of carbon (graphene, nano-tubes).

Prior to embarking on my academic career, I spent a significant period in the Aerospace and Defence sectors, initially with the Defence Science and Technology Laboratories and later with BAE Systems Advanced Technology Centre where I undertook research in pulsed power electromagnetics.
