Overview
I completed my MA in 2008 and my PhD in 2012, both in Applied Linguistics at Lancaster University, UK, with full funding from the Turkish Ministry of Education. Following my PhD, I held both academic and administrative positions at various universities in Turkey.
In 2019, I completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Global Development Institute (GDI), University of Manchester, as part of a research project on migration policy implementation. This experience expanded my expertise in operational and policy-level challenges of forced migration, with a specific focus on Syrian refugees in Turkey, Jordan, and Lebanon. My research examines not only the integration of refugees into host societies but also the broader institutional, socio-political, and cultural impacts of migration policies, as well as the tensions between global governance frameworks and local realities. Currently, I am a Research Fellow at the GDI, where I continue to focus on migration, displacement, and policy implementation.
Teaching
I am also actively engaged in teaching during the 2024-25 academic year. I deliver sessions on the ethics and ideology of humanitarianism for the HCRI 11021 Key Concepts module of the BSc in International Disaster Management and Humanitarian Response, providing students with critical insights into the values, principles, and political underpinnings of humanitarian efforts. Additionally, I teach the session on "Identity, Citizenship, and Belonging" as part of the MGDI60731 Migration, Mobility, and Displacement in the Contemporary World course. My teaching integrates real-world case studies and focuses on the complexities of forced migration and identity, particularly in the contexts of Syrian refugees in Turkey, Jordan, and Lebanon. I am also coordinating a Jean Monnet Module called the EU-Begin, funded by the EU.
Research Interests
My work emphasizes the lived experiences of displaced populations and explores how migration policies are shaped and implemented, particularly in response to global crises. I have a specific interest in the intersection of migration governance, identity formation, and public discourse, with a strong regional emphasis on the Middle East and Turkey.
