Dr Bernocchi specialises in early modern portraiture and cultural history, in particular the connection between art and ethics. She obtained her degrees at the University of Pavia (B.A.), The Warburg Institute in London (M.A.) and the University of Cambridge (PhD) and has previously taught at the University of Cambridge and the University of Warwick. She is currently co-editing a volume on the relationship between Petrarchism and sixteenth-century portraiture (with Dr Federica Pich and Dr Nicolò Morelli; Amsterdam University Press, forthcoming), publishing on a portrait by Bartolomeo Passerotti (ed. Lucia Tantardini and Rebecca Norris, forthcoming) and preparing several articles from her PhD dissertation on ‘Italian Heroic Portraits in the Sixteenth Century’.

She has contributed to catalogue the Stephen K. Scher collection of Italian medals for the Frick Collection, New York (The Scher Collection of Commemorative Medals, 2019), one of the world's greatest private collections of portrait medals, and works regularly as a translator and copyeditor for Brepols and Harvey Miller, currently preparing the English translation of Giovanni Careri’s Ebrei e cristiani nella Cappella Sistina (Quodlibet, 2020). She has curated the Latin translations for the English edition of Agostino Scilla, Vain Speculation Undeceived by Sense (Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences, Cambridge, and Arts Council of England, 2016). She is a regular contributor to the podcast series Naked Reflections, hosted by The Woolf Institute (Cambridge) on the popular website The Naked Scientists ( In the past, she has worked at Sotheby’s London, Old Master Paintings, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Dulwich Picture Gallery.
