I defend a narrativist thesis in the philosophy of history. Following Hayden White, Arthur Danto, and Louis Mink, I see narrative explanations as distinctive of what professional historians offer, and tackle the problems that face narrativism in a novel way from within subject-naturalism. In short, I argue that historians are best understood as the producers of strange tools which, despite their strangeness, are cognitive tools nonetheless.
