Biography

I previously studied at Queen's University Belfast where I completed a BSc Psychology degree in 2008 and my PhD with the School of Nursing and Midwifery in 2012. My thesis was entitled 'The emotional and social burdens of caring for a young child with complex health needs'. This was a mixed methods project which focused on the experiences of parents of infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit for surgical correction of a congenital condition. This inlcuded examing the distress they experienced and an exploration of their support needs and coping mechanisms. After working as a research assistant within the Arthritis Research UK Centre for Epidemiology at the University of Manchester for one year, I moved on to a research associate position within the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work where I worked on a Dimbleby Cancer Care funded national project. This mixed methods project identified factors associated with the successful implementation of the Carer Support Needs Assessment Tool intervention across a variety of palliative/ end-of-life care settings.
