Biography

I completed my PhD in International Politics at the University of Manchester in December 2009. From 2009 to 2011 I was Teaching Fellow in International Politics at Manchester. From 2011 to 2013 I was Hallsworth Research Fellow in Geography, also at Manchester. In 2014 I rejoined Politics in my current position as Lecturer in International Political Economy. From 2014-2016 I was granted leave to take up a temporary position as Research Coordinator at the National Centre of Stretegies for the Right to Territory (CENEDET) in Quito, Ecuador, a research institute directed by the human geographer David Harvey.

Research interests

My research explores the entanglement of space, power and ideology in the politics of development. My doctoral thesis addressed the contested production of space in southern Mexico; my post-doctoral research explored the staging of philanthrocapitalist fantasies in sub-Saharan Africa; my current work addresses the formulation and implementation of a series of post-neoliberal utopias in the Ecuadorian Amazon. I draw on historical geographical materialism and the critique of ideology, in narrating the profoundly contradictory ways in which the spaces of global capitalism are imagined, produced, and transformed.
